Such has been the advance in window film technology, it is now widely viewed as one of the primary methods of increasing the energy efficiency of your property, resulting in both savings to your budget and reductions in carbon footprint.

In 2011, the US Department of Energy (DOE) completed a study on the top 50 commercially available energy conservation technologies. These were ranked on payback, probability of success and overall energy savings.

Power and heating costs have risen substantially over the past few years in the commercial building environment along with the need to reduce carbon footprints and meet carbon targets.

During summer months, solar heat gain adds to the thermal load of a building.

Effective use of solar reflective film can reduce heat gain by up to 82% significantly lowering the load on cooling systems thus saving energy and costs.

During winter months, inefficient windows can significantly add to heat loss and energy costs.

Typically, the U-value of single glazing is 5.88 and 2.2-2.9 for non-coated double glazing. While replacing windows with the latest energy efficient glass will dramatically improve these U-values it can be a costly and problematic exercise with very long payback periods and little return on investment.

Energy Performance of Buildings Regulations 2007

Did you know that air-conditioning systems become liable for testing five years after installation?

Any building in which more than a total of 12 kilowatts of air conditioning has been installed is required to have an independent assessment. This necessitates a thorough analysis of zones being conditioned by that equipment to determine whether it is able to operate effectively. An assessment would take account of heat produced by activities within the zone, be that from people or processes and that rate at which such energy is lost through the walls, floor ceilings and windows. Use of other heating or ventilation systems will also be noted, particularly where there are no means of inhibiting simultaneous operation. Further, all of the air conditioning equipment, both inside and outside of the building is examined to determine whether it is working and maintained correctly, and that its controls enable effective use by occupants.

The process should result in the issue of a certificate valid for 5 years and in many cases may carry recommendations for improvement and advice on how best to use equipment.
