Do you run a shop which places some of its stock in your front windows? Do you have treasured furniture or possessions which are in direct sunlight at any point? If you answer yes to either of these questions, you are running the risk of sun damage due to prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultra violet light.
What Causes Fabrics To Fade?
It is all about the chemical makeup of an object. The technical term for colour fading is photo degradation. There are light absorbing colour bodies called chromophores that are present in dyes. The colour(s) we see are based upon these chemical bonds and the amount of light that is absorbed in a particular wavelength.
Ultraviolet rays from the sun have the ability to break down the chemical bonds and thus fade the colour(s) in an object – it is a bleaching effect. Some objects may be more prone to fading, such as dyed textiles and watercolours. Other objects may reflect the light more, which makes them less prone to fade.

As you can see from the pie chart above, the causes of fading can be varied. Approximately 40% of fabric fading can be attributed to the UV lights from the sun. Heat and light contribute approximately 25% each with the remaining 10% caused by other factors including poor ventilation, poor quality dyes and the effects of artificial light.
